Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme for strengthening education, cooperation, and innovation across Europe. For universities, it offers unique opportunities to build international partnership projects, develop strategic perspectives, and work with partner institutions to design forward-looking educational approaches. With a budget of over 26 billion euros for the current funding period (2021–2027), Erasmus+ provides a reliable framework for fostering long-term cooperation between higher education institutions.

Each year, the programme supports tens of thousands of projects involving universities, research institutes, and other educational organisations throughout Europe. These projects not only promote the mobility of students and staff but also focus on the joint development of innovative teaching concepts, digital learning environments, curriculum reform, and evidence-based educational research. Through collaboration in international consortia, sustainable structures are created that enhance knowledge exchange and improve the overall quality of higher education.

The objectives of Erasmus+ go far beyond international exchange. The programme places strong emphasis on social inclusion, ensuring that people from all backgrounds have equitable access to educational opportunities. It also prioritises digital transformation and promotes an environmentally responsible and sustainable approach to education. As a result, many projects address themes such as digitalisation, environmental awareness, or sustainable development. In addition, Erasmus+ supports democratic engagement, youth participation, and the development of key competences needed for independent living and working in an increasingly interconnected world.

For partnership projects, this means they are expected to be innovative, inclusive, and forward-looking, offering clear added value for the European higher education landscape. Through Erasmus+, universities are supported in developing collaborative solutions to current challenges and strengthening the education sector in a sustainable and meaningful way.
